If you wonder why certain companies backed out of their promises to be more diverse, equitable, and inclusive, this may be the answer. Up until recently, all we threatened was low sales. They threaten violence, destruction, and death.
Let's go back to last year, when Anheuser-Busch decided to send trans influencer Dylan McDermott a couple of cases of Bud Light. Do you remember the immediate response from the anti-trans crowd? Especially from a certain has-been rocker named Kid Rock? If you remember, he took a machine gun and shot several cases of Spud McKenzie’s favorite brew. The message was very clear. It was not just “go woke, go broke.” It was your bankruptcy would be the least of your worries.
And ever since the 47th President of the United States took office, accompanied by the world's wealthiest human, who's this owning of his trans daughter led on his own journey down the dark MAGA hole, the MAGA minions have felt emboldened to threaten with not only boycotts but violence as well. Months after the attack on the Capitol on 1/6/21, an 18 year old boy named Kyle Rittenhouse was deified by MAGA for brandishing an assault rifle and using it to kill a human. Rittenhouse says it was in self-defense, though many have doubted that. The Left continue to persist that they are not that evil, that they would never kill in cold blood to advance The Cause. This was until late 2024, when the Resistance found their own Kyle Rittenhouse: Luigi Mangione, awaiting trial at the time of this writing for gunning down the CEO of a major health insurance company in cold blood on the streets of New York City.
With the less deification of Mangione, it seems that many on the Left have crossed the line of evil that many on the Right did a long time ago. Most still believe in the time-honored tradition of boycotting those that you disagree with. But in 2025 this is the danger: let's assume that boycott's persuade its targets…no pun intended…to reverse their stand on DEI. Obviously the Resistance would be pleased. But how would MAGA? With a cake the obvious defeat with any modicum of grace? One would hope, but the war that Team47 is waging is not one of the Italians and troop movements, but individuals with hot heads and their own legally purchased weaponry. Their response may be not at all, their own boycott, or they would not stop at that. Possibly threatening destruction of stores and property, or even the physical harm that targeted companies employees.
And if you think that is far-fetched, understand that so far on the opposite side, there has also been a violent response. Products made by the aforementioned billionaire have been set fire or otherwise vandalized. It seems we who are on the left, not all of us.. not most of us...but a large enough number who feel that the only response to any of what is going on is destruction. No I feel the one thing we need to not do is turn into those people who read despise. But right now no one is listening to anyone like me. Being peaceable is not visceral enough. But we keep forgetting that actual lives are on the line, and not just those lives affected by the harm being done by those people we are opposing. We were talking about the potential harm that we may cause to others on either side.
You can make up lost sales. You can't make up a lost life. And everyone involved in this are careening towards a point where that one horrible thing is going to happen. I pray that we come up with something that will be creative enough and effective enough to prevent that from happening.
